Answer engine optimisation (AEO)

The second layer of the Visibility Stack: making sure a machine can lift a correct, complete answer out of your page without a human editing it.

Answer engine optimisation illustrated as a diagram in the ZR Tech brand style.

Answer engine optimisation is the practice of structuring a page so a machine can extract a complete, correct answer from it without human editing. It targets featured snippets, People Also Ask entries and voice assistant responses, using self-contained answers, question-form headings and structured data.

Overview

Answer engine optimisation is what you do when the goal is not to be ranked but to be quoted. A search engine that shows a featured snippet has decided that one passage on one page answers the question so completely that it can be displayed on its own. AEO is the discipline of making sure that passage is yours and that it is correct when it appears without any of the surrounding page.

The distinction from ordinary search work is sharper than most suppliers admit. Ranking rewards depth, authority and topical coverage. Extraction rewards brevity, structure and self-containment. A page can rank first and never earn a snippet, because its answer is spread across four paragraphs and requires context to make sense. Equally, a page ranking fifth can hold the snippet, because position zero is drawn from the top ten rather than only from the top one.

The mechanism is worth understanding because it changes how you write. When a machine assembles an answer, it looks for a contiguous passage that is complete, factual and unambiguous about its own subject. It cannot follow a pronoun back to a heading. It cannot infer that "our approach" means "ZR Tech's approach". A passage beginning "We do this differently" is unusable no matter how good the rest of the page is. A passage beginning "Answer engine optimisation is the practice of…" is immediately usable.

This is also why AEO has become more valuable rather than less as assistants have spread. Voice results, People Also Ask panels, AI Overviews and chatbot answers are all solving the same extraction problem with slightly different presentation. A page structured to be extractable serves all of them at once, which makes AEO unusually efficient work: one structural pass improves several surfaces simultaneously.

In the Visibility Stack model ZR Tech works to, AEO is layer two. Layer one, search engine optimisation, decides whether a machine can reach and read your page. Layer two decides whether it can lift an answer out of it. Layer three, generative engine optimisation, decides whether it will name your business when asked for a recommendation. Each layer depends on the one below. There is no point structuring perfect answer blocks on a page that is not indexed, which is why the audit stage of any AEO engagement checks layer one first and stops if it is broken.

The honest complication is that winning a snippet sometimes costs you the click. If someone asks what your opening hours are and the answer appears in full on the results page, they do not visit your site. Whether that is a loss depends entirely on what the query was. For a factual query it is a fair trade: you gained brand exposure at the cost of a visit that would have bounced. For a commercial query where the visitor needs to see your work before enquiring, the same outcome is a genuine loss. Deciding which queries to pursue is part of the work, not an afterthought.

What makes AEO tractable is that almost all of it is verifiable. You can read your own page and check whether the passage under each heading answers that heading in its first two sentences. You can paste your structured data into the Rich Results Test and see whether it validates. You can search a target question and see who currently holds the snippet and what shape their answer takes. Very little of this discipline requires trust in a supplier, which is why the implementation checklist below is published in full.

Who this is for

This service earns its cost for the situations below. If none of them describes you, say so on the call and we will point you elsewhere.

  • A business whose buyers research extensively before enquiring, asking many specific questions along the way.
  • A professional service where the questions people ask are consistent and answerable in a paragraph.
  • A site that already ranks in the top ten for commercial terms but earns no snippets or People Also Ask entries.
  • A company whose products are commonly asked about by voice, such as anything location or hours related.
  • A technical or regulated field where a precise, correct answer is genuinely valuable to the reader.
  • Any business preparing for generative engine work, since AEO is the prerequisite layer.

What the work covers

Direct answer blocks

A 40 to 55 word answer placed directly under the H1 of every content page, written so it reads correctly when quoted with zero surrounding context. This single element is the highest-leverage change available in AEO, and most sites do not have one on a single page.

Question-form heading structure

H2 headings phrased as the questions people actually type, each answered completely within its own first two sentences. Background and nuance follow afterwards, which keeps the extractable passage clean without making the page shallow.

Structured data for answers

FAQPage, HowTo, QAPage and speakable markup implemented and validated, so a machine is told explicitly which text on the page is an answer rather than having to infer it from layout.

Tables and lists built for extraction

Genuine table markup with a caption, scoped headers and one fact per cell, plus ordered lists where the content is truly a sequence. List and table snippets are the two easiest formats to win and the two most often faked with styled div elements.

Question demand research

Mapping the questions your buyers ask before purchasing, drawn from People Also Ask panels, Search Console query data, and the questions your own team answers on the phone every week. That last source is consistently the most valuable and the most overlooked.

FAQ blocks that are not marketing

Six to ten questions per page, each answered in 40 to 80 words, answer-first, with no promotional preamble. An FAQ answer that opens by restating how excellent the company is will not be extracted, because the first sentence does not answer the question.

Semantic HTML repair

Real heading hierarchy with no skipped levels, correct use of main, article, section, figure and time elements, and definition markup for technical terms. Answer engines lean on document structure far more heavily than ranking algorithms do.

Snippet monitoring

Tracking which target questions you hold, which you lost and to whom, and what shape the winning answer takes. Snippets change hands frequently, so this is a maintenance activity rather than a one-off project.

How it works

Every engagement runs through these stages. You approve at each one before the next begins.

  1. Check the foundation

Confirm the pages are indexed, fast enough and free of crawl obstacles. AEO on an unindexed page is wasted effort, so if layer one is broken this stage stops the engagement and redirects it to technical search work first.

  2. Build the question inventory

Collect the questions buyers actually ask, from Search Console, People Also Ask panels, competitor pages and your own sales conversations. Each question is assigned to exactly one page, so no two pages compete to answer the same thing.

  3. Write the answer layer

For every mapped page, write the direct answer block, restructure the H2 headings into question form, and rewrite the opening two sentences beneath each so they answer that heading completely. This is editing work, not new content production.

  4. Add structured data

Implement FAQPage, HowTo and speakable markup as part of a connected entity graph rather than isolated snippets, then validate every page in the Rich Results Test until it returns zero errors and zero warnings.

  5. Publish and request indexing

Push the changes and submit the updated URLs for recrawl. Snippet eligibility usually appears within two to eight weeks, considerably faster than ranking changes, because the page is already ranking and only its extractability has changed.

  6. Monitor and contest

Track which questions you hold and which a competitor took. Losing a snippet usually means someone published a cleaner, shorter, more complete answer, and it is regained the same way rather than by adding length.

Making the choice

The five snippet formats, what triggers each, and the structural mistake that costs it
Snippet formatWhat triggers itHow to structure for itCommon reason sites lose it
Paragraph Definition and explanation queries: what is, why does, how much A 40 to 60 word self-contained passage immediately after a question heading The answer opens with context or a pronoun instead of the subject
Numbered list Process and sequence queries: how to, steps to, order of A real ordered list of five to eight items, each starting with a verb Steps built as styled divs or headings rather than list markup
Bulleted list Collection queries: types of, examples of, what is included An unordered list of parallel items, each a complete standalone phrase Items written as sentence fragments that need the lead-in to make sense
Table Comparison and specification queries: X versus Y, pricing, dimensions A real table element with a caption and scoped column headers Layout tables or grids that look like tables but carry no table semantics
Video Demonstration queries where seeing the action matters Chaptered video with a transcript and VideoObject markup No transcript, so there is nothing textual to extract

What you get out of it

  • Visibility above the first organic result, in the position drawn from the whole top ten rather than only the top one.
  • Appearances in People Also Ask panels, which can multiply the surfaces one page occupies on a single results page.
  • Voice assistant answers, which read a single extracted passage and name its source.
  • Better eligibility for AI Overviews and assistant citations, since both use the same extraction logic.
  • A genuinely clearer page for human readers, because answer-first writing is simply better writing.
  • Faster results than ranking work, typically two to eight weeks rather than three to six months.
  • The structural prerequisite for generative engine work, so the same effort serves layer three.

The implementation checklist

Everything below can be done without hiring anyone. It is published because a reader who does it themselves and still needs help is a better client than one who never understood the work.

  1. Search each of your target questions and record who currently holds the snippet and in which format.
  2. Add a 40 to 55 word answer block directly under the H1 of every commercial page.
  3. Read that block aloud with the page hidden and check it still makes complete sense on its own.
  4. Rewrite every H2 into the question form a buyer would actually type.
  5. Rewrite the first two sentences under each H2 so they answer that heading before adding any context.
  6. Remove opening phrases such as "we believe", "our approach" and "in this article" from every answer passage.
  7. Convert any process described in prose into a real ordered list with five to eight verb-led steps.
  8. Convert any comparison into a real table element with a caption and scoped headers.
  9. Add an FAQ block of six to ten questions per page, each answered in 40 to 80 words, answer-first.
  10. Implement FAQPage and HowTo structured data, then validate until the Rich Results Test is clean.
  11. Add speakable markup pointing at your H1 and your answer block.
  12. Check heading hierarchy for skipped levels, since a jump from H2 to H4 breaks the document outline.
  13. Resubmit the updated URLs in Search Console and record the date so you can measure the lag.

How to measure it

The primary measure is how many target questions you hold a snippet or People Also Ask entry for, checked monthly against a fixed list. It is a count, it is verifiable by anyone, and it cannot be presented favourably by choosing different terms, which is exactly why it is the number to insist on.

The secondary measure is impressions against clicks in Search Console for the affected pages. Winning a snippet typically raises impressions and may lower click-through rate. That combination is normal and is not a failure, but it does need to be a decision rather than a surprise, which is why the query selection happens before the work.

The third measure is qualitative and increasingly the most useful: ask an assistant your target questions and see whether your page is used and cited. This is imprecise, varies between models and between runs, and is still worth doing monthly, because it is the surface where buyer behaviour is currently moving fastest.

Common mistakes

Writing answers that need the page around them

The single most common failure. A passage that opens with "This approach means…" or "We handle it differently" cannot be extracted, because the machine has no way to resolve what "this" and "we" refer to. Every answer passage must name its own subject in its first sentence, even when that feels repetitive to a human reading the whole page.

Burying the answer under a marketing preamble

FAQ answers that begin by praising the company waste the only sentences that matter. The answer goes first; the positioning, if it is needed at all, goes after. If the first sentence does not answer the question, the passage will not be used regardless of how good sentences three and four are.

Faking tables and lists with styled containers

A grid of divs that looks like a table to a human carries no table semantics for a machine, so it cannot produce a table snippet. The same applies to steps built from headings rather than an ordered list. Use the real element; the visual result can be identical.

Adding FAQ schema that does not match the visible page

Structured data describing questions and answers that a visitor cannot see on the page is a guidelines violation and risks the markup being ignored or penalised. Every question in FAQPage markup must appear, with the same answer, in the visible content.

Making answers longer to seem more thorough

Extraction favours completeness within a short span, not length. A 120 word answer is usually rejected in favour of a competitor's 45 word one that says the same thing. If an answer will not fit in 60 words, the question is too broad and should be split into two.

Treating AEO as a one-off project

Snippets change hands regularly as competitors publish cleaner answers. A page optimised once and never revisited will lose positions it won. Budget for quarterly review of the question inventory rather than treating this as a fixed-scope job that finishes.

What this is not

AEO is not a ranking service. It does not lift your position in the ordinary results; it changes what happens once you are already there. A page that does not rank in the top ten will not win a snippet no matter how well structured its answers are, which is why technical and content search work comes first.

It is not schema markup on its own. Adding FAQPage structured data to a page whose visible answers are vague and self-referential changes nothing, because the markup only labels text that already exists. Suppliers selling AEO as a structured data installation are selling the smaller half of the job.

It is not always desirable. For commercial queries where the buyer needs to see your work before enquiring, winning the snippet can remove the visit you wanted. Those queries are deliberately excluded from the target list rather than pursued because the win is easy to report.

And it is not generative engine optimisation. AEO makes a passage extractable; GEO makes a business nameable. They share structural foundations and diverge sharply in what they reward. If your actual complaint is that assistants recommend competitors when asked for a supplier, the relevant work is on the GEO page, not this one.

This will not work if…

  • Your pages are not ranking in the top ten for the questions you want to own.
  • The questions have no meaningful search demand, which is common for very specialised B2B terms.
  • Your content genuinely requires context to be correct, as with regulated financial or medical guidance.
  • You are unwilling to publish direct answers because the real answer is "it depends on your situation".
  • The site cannot be edited quickly, since AEO is iterative and needs several rounds of refinement.
  • Your commercial goal needs the click, and the queries you want are exactly the ones a snippet would satisfy.

Tools and platforms

What the work is actually built with. Named so you can verify it and take it elsewhere if you ever want to.

What you physically receive

  • A question inventory mapping every target question to exactly one page
  • Direct answer blocks written for every commercial page
  • Restructured headings and answer-first opening passages
  • FAQ blocks of six to ten questions per page, with the source in your hands
  • FAQPage, HowTo and speakable structured data, validated to zero errors
  • A snippet tracking sheet listing every target question and its current holder
  • A written guide so your own team can maintain the answer layer without us

Realistic timelines

Ranges, not promises. The figure in your scope document is the one that counts.

Typical delivery times for answer engine optimisation, and the variables behind each range
Scale of workTypical elapsed timeWhat decides it
Question inventory and audit One to two weeks Site size and how much query data already exists in Search Console
Answer layer written Two to four weeks Number of pages and whether subject-matter review is needed internally
Structured data implemented One to two weeks Platform flexibility and whether a developer queue is involved
First snippet movement Two to eight weeks Crawl frequency, existing ranking position, and competitor answer quality
Stable snippet holdings Three to six months How actively competitors contest the same questions

Questions about answer engine optimisation

Answer engine optimisation is the practice of structuring a page so a machine can extract a complete, correct answer from it without human editing. It targets featured snippets, People Also Ask entries and voice results, using self-contained answer passages, question-form headings and validated structured data.

SEO works to get a page ranked; AEO works to get a passage extracted once it is already ranking. Ranking rewards depth and authority, extraction rewards brevity and self-containment. A page can rank first and never earn a snippet because its answer is spread across several paragraphs.

You need to be in the top ten, not necessarily first. Snippets are drawn from the whole first page, which is why a fifth-place result with a cleaner answer regularly displaces the leader. Below the top ten, structural work has no snippet effect and technical search work is the priority.

Sometimes, and it should be a deliberate choice. For factual queries the visitor gets the answer without clicking, which trades a low-value visit for brand exposure. For commercial queries where the buyer needs to see your work, that trade is a real loss, so those queries are excluded from the target list.

Yes, though its display eligibility has narrowed over time. Its enduring value is interpretive rather than decorative: it tells a machine explicitly which text is a question and which is its answer, which improves how assistants and answer engines use your content even when no rich result displays.

Between 40 and 60 words for a paragraph snippet. Shorter tends to be incomplete, longer tends to be truncated or passed over in favour of a competitor. If an answer will not fit in 60 words, the question is too broad and should be split into two narrower questions.

Yes, directly. A voice assistant reads a single extracted passage aloud and usually names its source, so the same answer-first structure that wins a paragraph snippet wins the voice result. Adding speakable markup pointing at your H1 and answer block makes the intended passage explicit.

They address different failures. If you rank well but never appear in snippets or People Also Ask panels, that is an extraction problem and ordinary search work will not fix it. If you do not rank at all, AEO has nothing to act on and search work comes first.

Count how many of your target questions you hold a snippet or People Also Ask entry for, against a fixed list checked monthly. It is verifiable by anyone and cannot be made to look better by substituting easier terms, which is why it is the number to require from any supplier.

Most of it, yes. The checklist on this page is deliberately complete enough to work through in-house, and the largest single improvement is writing a self-contained answer block under each H1. What takes practice is judging which questions to pursue and which to leave, since not every snippet is worth winning.
